Read by Peter Kenny, award-winning narrator of the Culture series by Iain M. Banks.
In a ravaged near-future England, a private detective with psychic powers might be the last hope standing between mankind and total collapse. Mindstar Rising is the first cyberpunk thriller in Peter F. Hamilton’s hugely popular Greg Mandel series. For fans of James S.A. Corey.
It’s the 21st century and global warming is here to stay, so forget the way your country used to look. And get used to the free market, too – the companies possess all the best hardware, and they’re calling the shots now.
In a world like this, a man open to any offers can do just fine. A man like Greg Mandel for instance, who’s psi-boosted, wired into the latest sensory equipment and carrying state-of-the-art weaponry. He’s also been part of the English Army’s Mindstar Battalion.
As the cartels battle for control of a revolutionary new power source, and corporate greed outstrips national security, tension is mounting to boiling point. And Greg Mandel is about to face the ultimate test.
Mindstar Rising is followed by A Quantum Murder and The Nano Flower to complete the Greg Mandel trilogy.

Awesome!

I rather like these stories as written word… I e read them all and very much enjoyed them as I recall.
In fact, a lot of Peter F Hamilton’s books ARE good - the problem, for me at least, I’m aware some people think differently - is when John Lee narrates them! Good grief he’s terrible! He sucks all the interest, fun, believability from every book he reads.
Thankfully, this series is NOT read by John Lee and, in my opinion, it’s fantastic for that alone…
Seriously though: genuinely good stories, interesting characters and the concept of the ‘gland’ that makes Gregg Mendel what he is - it’s just weird enough to be fascinating and entertaining.

Totally disagree about John Lee. He’s fantastic, one of the best for action and adventure stuff.
The problem with the Greg Mendell books is the fact they are not very good and full of absurd sexism, that feels crass to even someone like me who can usually overlook that stuff.
I assume he was going very much for old james bond and other action spy books and that tone was pervasive in that sort of book. Or he was just an idiot who grew up a bit.

Well there is always the Toby Longworth version you can go to instead. But I suspect the problem is that you don’t like British accents. Deal with it, we all have to get use to US accents for most of the books and they are fine once you are used to them.
I think John Lee’s narration is very good.
Peter F Hamilton’s stuff is often pretty old fashioned somewhat sexist male oriented perspective. It’s no problem for me, just don’t read it if you can’t tolerate it.

I would rather listen to British narrators as even though I am an American, English just sounds better coming from English narrators. Go figure.
