Noam Chomsky is widely regarded as the most influential thinker of our time, but never before has he devoted a major book to one topic: income inequality.
“During the Great Depression, things were much worse than they are today, but there was an expectation that things were going to get better. There was a real sense of hopefulness. There isn’t today…. Inequality is really unprecedented. In terms of total inequality, it’s like the worst periods in American history. But if you refine it more closely, the inequality comes from the extreme wealth in a tiny sector of the population, a fraction of 1 percent…. Not only is it extremely unjust in itself, inequality has highly negative consequences on the society as a whole because the very fact of inequality has a corrosive, harmful effect on democracy.”
(Noam Chomsky, in Requiem for the American Dream)
Requiem for the American Dream is not an essay collection but an entire work of some 70,000 words, based on four years of interviews with Chomsky by the editors. Chomsky considers these to be his final, long-form documentary interviews. It is a book that makes Chomsky’s breadth and depth accessible and at the same time gives us his most powerful political ideas with unprecedented, breathtaking directness. It will go down as one of his greatest and most lasting contributions.

Thanks so much!

I find that the biggest problem is the desire or willingness to work. It’s true that sometimes people need some help to get going, but it is up to each one of us to do the best we can. To expect, or rather, to mandate by law, everyone else to pay $100,000 of college tuition or $10,000 a month cancer treatments, since I cannot afford them, would be extremely selfish and inconsiderate of me, despite either one being to my personal advantage. Alas, many men thought of income inequality as something to be attained, including the U.S.S.R., China, North Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam, Venezuela, etc. Whoever desires their government to equalize the playing field, will learn to depend upon their government for their very life, if they are deemed not too inconvenient.

And yet @Jiminy Cricket is here downloading free audiobooks instead of paying for them!!!

Spoofy - That’s not determinative of anything. It doesn’t invalidate any of Jiminy’s incisive points. People who consider themselves on the left of the spectrum are also here (in considerable numbers) “stealing from the worker” - depriving those who labour of the fruits of their effort.
It all cancels itself out.
No one can cast the first stone.
This is fatal for your argument, I’m afraid.
Broadly, the people who use the site take a libertarian (that word!) approach to the free distribution of knowledge, entertainment and pregnant, male werewolf novels. It’s just how the net has evolved - it’s bigger than the both of us!

@caesar963 there’s hardly anything to argue with a post so poorly written as the one he replied to. There’s nothing in the post that makes any sense what so ever.

“To expect, or rather, to mandate by law, everyone else to pay $100,000 of college tuition or $10,000 a month cancer treatments”
Nobody would pay for it, the government would because they are the currency issuer. They can afford anything that is for sale in dollars, and at any price. And the price ends up being drastically lower when they buy in bulk although, being the currency issuer, they can also act as price setter. Taxpayers haven’t funded anything since Nixon ended the Bretton Woods agreement in 1971 and the Dollar became fiat.
The whole purpose of government is provide the things individuals cannot provide for themselves, like medicine and education. But America is a very selfish society, full of dumb people who can be convinced that they are better off paying astronomical sums of money for things that every other Western government gives their citizens for free, because God forbid someone else succeeds instead of them. How a nation so brainwashed by tall poppy syndrome became a global superpower beggars belief!
