In the summer of 1925, the sleepy hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee, became the setting for one of the 20th century’s most contentious dramas: the Scopes trial that pit William Jennings Bryan and the anti-Darwinists against a teacher named John Scopes into a famous debate over science, religion, and their place in public education.
That trial marked the start of a battle that continues to this day - in Dover, Pennsylvania; Kansas; Cobb County, Georgia; and many other cities and states throughout the country. Edward Larson’s classic, Summer for the Gods, received the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1998 and is the single most authoritative account of a pivotal event whose combatants remain at odds in school districts and courtrooms. For this edition Larson has added a new preface that assesses the state of the battle between creationism and evolution and points the way to how it might potentially be resolved.

Any time someone tells you that science doesn’t discover truth: it only ‘understands change’ or ‘falsifies hypotheses’” then remember this controversy in which the entire problem absolutely depends on people treating a scientific conclusion as a dogmatic absolute truth.

Actually, if you think about it, Science and Religion, or Faith are “Non-Overlapping Magisteria” They really have nothing to say about each other.

There is no controversy and never was. However, science has a very clear understanding of what religion is: last remnants of mating rituals and in a more modern bent a collective delusion fabricated by sociopaths and bent to achive their desires.

That seems unusually balanced and reasonable, katibi. Next time I’m filling out the religious denomination section of my census form, I’ll put some stuff about “sociopathic bent fabricator” and “collective mating rituals” - that should just about cover it. At least it might amuse the census taker; just so long as he doesn’t try to test me.
@mklangelo - absolutely right, faith and values are, of necessity, separate from anything that can be established by the scientific method. However, people keep confusing them, and that forms the false foundation for the “debate” that litters the internet and elsewhere. Great avatar, by the way, on a general evolutionary theme.
